As parents we carry a lot on our shoulders with caring for our children, making a living and being the head of the household. With all this seriousness, we need to make sure that we infuse some fun into the family. Sharing in a laugh or enjoyable activity is what draws us together and helps make life enjoyable. It's nice when we can let our hair down, act silly, and let loose.
Growing up my youngest brother took the role as family clown, making funny faces that would crack us all up even in the mist of serious situations. Some people are good at telling jokes, leading others to giggles or being able to lighten up the mood. I have friends who are pranksters, others who travel as a family far and wide to find the best ice cream, and still others who have a running Friday night 'game night'. Spontaneity is great, but we may also need to plan. I find it helps to establish device free or disturbance free times when everyone puts their phones away and gives their full attention to each other. Meal times are interruption free zones in our house.
With the pandemic it can be uncomfortable and unsafe to join in large gatherings but there are lots of inventive ways to social distance visit, enjoy a fun outdoor activity, and we can always come up with creative home fun. Let each family member take turns being in charge, pick something to do or take the lead. Put a smile on everyone's face by baking cookies or swinging on the swings together. Shoot baskets, kick a ball or play dress up. Throw a party, play a game or watch a funny show.
When the kids were young, we had fun together building Legos, doing art projects or decorating the house. Everyone smiles when we head outdoor together, play games, make ice cream or rough house on the floor. We love to travel (both day trips and vacations), spend time by the water and just all be together to share a meal.
Fun is free, though it make take a little bit of effort to clear our schedule. Just keeping a sense of humor, purposefully injecting silliness into the day and sharing a smile keep our focus on enjoying each other. Find ways to have fun around the house every day.
