It's hard not to react when kids turn their noses up at dinner, refuse to try something new, or are inflexible with any changes with food preparation. We want our kids to be open minded and receptive to a variety of flavors and cuisines.
We can start by introducing our kids to many different foods and fares from a young age. We can slice and dice that apple, introduce varying textures, shapes and flavors, as well as encourage them to try a small bite or sip of an aray of foods.
That being said, some kids are just picky. Many grow out of it with maturity but sometimes no matter how much exposure and assortment they experience, some people just have a limited palate. Of course we want to continually present opportunities to learn new things and expand our kid's menu. You never know when they may develop a taste for something left untouched in the past or grow out of only eating hot dogs or chicken fingers.
In our home If a child didn't like what was being served, they were welcome to prepare something quick for themselves
If at all possible try to avoid battling over food. The best thing we can do is present healthy choices, limit sugary options and make mealtime enjoyable. Give a few food options and allow kids to pick while also encouraging them to join in with meal prep. Set guidelines for table manners, snacks and mealtime expectations. Try not to obsess over pickiness, fight over food issues, and we especially want to avoid focusing on a child's weight whether over or under those standardized growth charts. The best way to encourage wholesome eating habits is by preparing well-balanced meals, providing healthy options and inviting everyone to share fun time together around food.
*Please note that it goes without saying, absolutely seek medical help for any health concerns, possible eating disorders or nourishment issues.
